In this Chinese brush painting on sustainable bamboo, Wyland pays his respect to the koalas of eastern Australia, where the eucalyptus trees these animals feed on are most plentiful. "Koalas are fascinating creatures," Wyland says. "They rarely leave the trees and spend most of their days tucked into nooks sleeping. And when they're not sleeping, they're eating. They can even store snacks of leaves in the pouches of their cheeks."

Storm

Several years ago, Wyland created Sea Walker, an undersea character for a new book and film project. The story begins with an epic storm that sinks the boat of a young family. The only survivor, a boy, is rescued by a group of dolphins, then taken by a manta ray to a deep volcanic vent where he is transformed into a creature that is half-human, half-dolphin. "Storm" is the opening scene from the story. "I enjoy this painting immensely," Wyland says. "It's a departure from my marine-life style, and it takes me back to my early marine artist days when I used to paint ships at sea."

Laguna Green Flash

Molokai Miracle

Hope for the Sea

Wyland's original painting, "Hope for the Sea," gives the viewer an ethereal glimpse into the undersea world of a trio of dolphins against the backdrop of a colorful reef. "The light reaching down to the coral reef reminds us of the living, giving sun," Wyland says. "Without the light, the coral reef could not grow and support the vibrant life that thrives among the reef. Glacier Waters

Despite the presence of glaciers, the chilly waters of Southeast Alaska, prince William Sound and the Barren Islands of Alaska play host to humpback whales every spring, who feast on the abundant food sources. In this mixed media image by Wyland, the artist uses his artistic imagination and photography to depict the first moments of a humpback's deep dive in search of food. "At one time before whaling, there were about 15,000 humpbacks in this area of Alaska," Wyland says. "They've made a comeback, but scenes like this are still rare."
